We are pleased to announce the judges’ decision that Michael Betteridge (of Manchester) and Nathan Jones (of Cardiff) deserved jointly to win the Chorale's competition for young composers to set Thomas’s poem “The Hand That Signed the Paper” to music. The judges were impressed with Michael’s insight into the warlike aspects of the poem and its representation in music resolving into a haunting final passage. Nathan Jones’ setting impressed with its innovation and ability to create an immediate atmosphere whilst complementing the meaning of the text. Both composers were invited to work on their pieces with the Chorale and the judges’ decision to award a joint first prize was a popular one. The Chorale has now had the opportunity to perform each of these works at premières in London and Swansea.
