Dylan Thomas Young Composer Competition - Winners Announced

Picture
To mark the centenary of the birth of poet Dylan Thomas the London Welsh Chorale launched a competition for young composers to set Thomas’s poem The Hand That Signed The Paper for SATB choir and keyboard accompaniment.

The competition was judged by Simon Halsey (LSO Chorus/Berlin Rundfunkchor), Edward Caswell (Netherlands Radio Choir), Edward-Rhys Harry (composer, conductor and Musical Director of the London Welsh Chorale) and Huw Edwards (broadcast journalist and President of the London Welsh Association).

We are pleased to announce the judges' decision that Michael Betteridge of Manchester (michaelbetteridge.com) and Nathan Jones of Cardiff (nathanjonesmusic.co.uk) deserved jointly to win the competition. The judges were impressed with Michael's insight into the warlike aspects of the poem and its representation in music resolving into a haunting final passage. Nathan Jones's setting impressed with its innovation and ability to create an immediate atmosphere whilst complementing the meaning of the text. Both composers were invited to work on their pieces with the Chorale and the judges' decision to award a joint first prize was a popular one. The Chorale has now had the opportunity to perform each of these works at premieres in London and Swansea.
